Step-by-Step Instructions: Dinosaur Christmas Yarn Craft
Step 1: Print and prepare your template
Gather your materials and print the free dinosaur craft template. You can download it [here]. If you prefer to draw your own, simply create a triangle-shaped Christmas tree and a friendly dinosaur face to match.
Step 2: Create your Christmas tree base
Cut a large triangle out of cardboard, ours measured about 10 cm across the bottom and 15 cm tall. This will be the base of your dinosaur’s body.
Step 3: Wrap the yarn
Tape one end of your green yarn to the top of the triangle, then start wrapping it around the cardboard. Keep wrapping until your triangle is fully covered in yarn, creating a cozy, tree-like texture. Secure the end with tape or glue. The thicker the yarn, the easier it is for little hands to wrap.

Step 4: Make the spikes
Using green paper (ideally cardstock), draw and cut out the dinosaur’s back spikes. You can use the printable or make your own by cutting small triangles (around 2 cm wide). Glue them along one side of your triangle; that’s your dinosaur’s back!
Step 5: Add the legs and face
Cut two larger triangles for the legs and use a black marker to draw claws. For the head, cut an oval shape, draw a smile, and add a googly eye or draw your own (we used silly googly eyes with lashes). Don’t forget the teeth, they give your Christmas dinosaur its signature charm!
Step 6: Assemble your dinosaur
Glue all the paper pieces onto your yarn base, the head at the top, legs at the bottom, and spikes along the side. Hot glue works best for attaching the paper to the yarn, but school glue will do too.

Step 7: Decorate your Christmas dinosaur
Now for the fun part, decorating! Add colorful tiny pom-poms, little buttons, or shiny sequins to your dinosaur as decorative ornaments. You can even use glitter glue for some extra sparkle.
Step 8: Display your festive dino
Your dinosaur Christmas craft is ready! Hang it on your Christmas tree, display it on a shelf, or gift it to someone who loves dinosaurs as much as you do.
Why This Dinosaur Christmas Craft Is a Hit With Kids
This project is a blend of creativity and coziness. It’s perfect for a winter afternoon when you want to keep little hands busy, without needing fancy materials or lots of prep. Kids love the mix of textures (paper, yarn, and pom poms) and the joy of making something that’s completely their own.
It’s also a great craft for classrooms, as it encourages focus, creativity, and confidence. Plus, it’s almost impossible to make a “wrong” dinosaur, each one turns out uniquely adorable!
