How to make paper roll bird puppets with kids
Step-by-step craft instructions
Step 1: Let’s start by gathering the above craft supplies.
Step 2: Next, take a plane paper roll and flat your paper roll. With a scissor, you round the right top corner and left bottom corner; see pictures B & C above.
Step 3: Take your favorite paint colors and paint your paper roll. You can use acrylic paint so the colors really pop, but if you work with small kids, it´s recommended to use washable paint (Tempera paint, for example). We create a tie-dye effect and let the colors blend. We choose yellow, orange, red, and pink for one bird and pink, purple, blue, and green for the other birds. But you can also pick the typical parrot colors.
Step 4: Let the paint dry while we create the colorful paper tail, beak, and claws. These are all triangle-shaped.
We used four colors for the tail that matched the painted paper roll: yellow, orange, red, and pink. Each shape is a long-skinny triangle. We glued the narrow sites together. See picture F above.
The beak is one long orange triangle, and the claws are two small orange triangles.
Step 5: To adjust the beak, we make a small cut on the left (top side) of your paper roll (see picture E). Now, slide the beak into the cut. For the tail, repeat this process at the bottom right. See picture E above.
Next, glue the claws on your paper roll.
Step 6: If you have googly eyes at home, you can give your bird two eyes on each side of the paper roll. If you don´t have googly eyes, you can use buttons and beads or draw two cute eyes with a black marker. See picture G above.
Step 7: We will use a popsicle stick to turn your bird into a puppet. If you don´t have a popsicle stick, you can also look for a good stick outside. Glue the stick on the inside of your paper roll. See pictures H and I above. We used hot glue for this, but you can use school glue and secure extra with some tape.
