DIY pencil topper from cork, Miffy craft!

Did you ever think about creating a DIY pencil topper from a cork? Corks have the perfect shape to create small figures or animals. The cork texture makes them easy to paint and perfect for poking or drilling a hole. You can quickly turn them into a pencil topper or planter. So today, we created two Miffy pencil toppers. 

Miffy is a white rabbit in a series of picture books for small kids drawn and written by Dutch artist Dick Bruna. We are a fan of the simple Miffy illustrations (or Nijntje as we like to call her in Dutch), and we love to use her as an inspiration for our crafts.

DIY pencil topper, Miffy craft!

Craft supplies DIY pencil topper

• Cork
• White acrylic paint, we use Amsterdam Acrylics
• Black fine liner or paint marker
• Felt fabric
• Glue, we recommend using a glue gun
• Scissor

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Take a cork; if you have different cork options, take a pin with a little ticker on top; see the image below.

Step 2: If you want to turn Miffy into a pencil topper, first drill a hole on the bottom (smaller side) of your cork before you start decorating. 

Step 3: Paint your cork white. I used acrylic paint for good coverage and an even finish.

Step 4: Cut two long rabbit ears from cardstock/cardboard and two from felt fabric. Glue the felt ears on top of the cardstock ears; this way, your felt rabbit ears get a little more support. We made the cardstock ears a little longer so you can fold the bottom as a glue stroke. Please take a look at the picture above. 

Step 5: Cut a stroke of colored felt fabric and glue it around the cork as a little sweater. If you don’t have thought, you can also use paint instead. 

Step 6: Last but not least, draw with a fine black liner, two black eyes, and a little nose for the rabbit.
